Stop Your Spending Habit - Here's How!
In order to keep yourself from consistently going into debt - or worse - obtaining more debt, you'll need to take a good look at your spending habits and change them. That doesn't mean you have to cut spending money out cold turkey - it's not possible anyway - but changing your spending habit to a more financially aware spending habit will work better for you in the long run.
- Make a list before you go to any store. There are things you'll need to live day to day. But before you go out to buy them, write it down on a list. Then, just like when you are grocery shopping, only buy what is on your list. This will cut out impulse buying. If there is something you 'need' to pick up that isn't on your list, just leave it there. If it is really important, simply put it on the next list and get it later. Chances are you'll realize you don't really need it.
- Stay away from advertising. Take a look at how much the media around you is selling stuff and step away from it. When you register for a product you own, don't sign up for their email list. Mailing lists for stores are all advertising. Throw away junk mail and catalogs before you peek inside. If you didn't 'need' something five minutes before you saw it in the catalog, you don't need it now.
- Check your budget regularly. Everyday might be too much, but if you're just getting started, it might be a good idea. Take a look and see how you are better off today then you were yesterday because you are keeping your spending under control.
- Don't carry a credit card with you. Simply leave it in a safe place at home, where you will be able to access it when you need it. Use only cash when you are out and about. If you don't have the money with you for an impulse buy, you won't buy it and you'll be much better off.
- Before you reach the check out, add up what is in your cart. Are you on budget for this trip? If not, for each item ask yourself: Do I really need this? If the answer is no put it back. Remember, it will still be there to buy if you find you really did need it.
- Do not make a shopping trip a family outing. Children like to buy things and have a harder time saying no to impulse buys. If your children must come shopping with you, have them make a list beforehand, just like you.
- Make a list of long term goals and read it before going to the store check out. Be proud of yourself when you are able to stick to your new financially sound spending habits.
- Identify what triggers you to spend money and avoid it. Is it sales at your favorite clothing store, don't go. Clean your closet and find the coolest top you bought and forgot about. Check the local news for free things to do on the weekend. Bring a thermos of coffee to work with you and avoid high priced coffee shops. There are all sorts of ways to avoid your spending triggers.
- Clothing store or specialty store credit cards are not necessary for someone who wants to get out of debt. While you should save one department store card to a store that has things like appliances and other necessities, just in case your refrigerator breaks and their isn't enough cash in the emergency fund to cover it, otherwise, cut them up and get rid of them.
Following these tips will help you stop spending your money and start saving it. Simple changes in different areas and you'll be on your way.
