How to Save Money on Gas
The rise in the price of gas is continuing up and seems like it isn't going to stop. If you are like me, this is causing a major strain on the budget. So much so that I've come up with these 14 ways to save money on gas in your car. Read through these money saving suggestions to see if you could use them.
- Car pool with co-workers or others. Do you work in a large workplace? Find out if there is someone who takes the same route into work and buddy up. Or can you use public transportation? If so, then do so!
- Change your oil and get a tune-up regularly. Have your air filter checked with every oil change. A car that is in tip-top shape will run more efficiently and use less gas. This will also save money by creating less wear and tear on your car, making it last longer for you.
- Combine errands and do less running around. If you need to get the grocery shopping done and you need to pick up your children from school, make it in one trip. The less hopping back and forth to your home, the less distance you go and the less gas you use. To get good at this you'll need to do some planning, but it is worth the time and effort.
- Check your tire pressure. Low tire pressure will add drag to your car and thereby use more gas. So keep your tire gauge handy and check every other time you fill up. You can find the recommend tire pressure in your cars owner's manual.
- Shop around for the best gas prices. Do you work two towns over? Are the prices better there. Pay attention to who is charging what and go with the least expensive. Also, if there is a sudden drop in price, fill up your tank even if it doesn't need a lot. Sudden drops seem to be followed by huge leaps, so you may save more than you think.
- Use the car with the best gas mileage. Seems easy enough, right? It is. If two people are going to work, the one traveling the furthest shouldn't be using the big SUV. Thinking through these trips will save quite a bit of money monthly, since you travel to work 5 days a week.
- Park and walk. When you have errands to do, park the car in a centrally located are and walk to the different places you need to go to. There is no reason to waste the gas on going from one parking lot to another.
- Drive correctly. Don't stomp on the gas after you've stop at a red light and don't speed. These two tips alone will save you money and put it back in your pocket rather than in your gas tank. Use the cruise control for the best gas usage when highway driving.
- Clean out your car. What's in the back seat? What's in the trunk? Hauling around extra weight uses up gas. Unless its needed, get rid of it.
- Make gas mileage your number one priority when you purchase your next car. The market pays attention to the consumer and the more you want better gas mileage in a car, the more likely we'll start seeing that in the automobile market. Hybrids aren't a bad idea, either.
- Avoid traffic. Go to work early and come home early or a little later. So much gas is wasted on cars that are just sitting in traffic. Stop and go traffic isn't much better. You can save money by avoiding traffic all together.
- Become a member. Some gas stations offer free gas if you fill up there or some grocery stores or bulk stores like Sam's Club offer gas to their members at discount prices. Check around and do the math for your best savings.
- Use the lowest octane for your car. Premium is not necessary in most cars and not worth the extra ten or fifteen cents it costs as it does not have that much advantage over the regular.
- Of course there are many ideas that involve not using your car, but for those of us who need to the above tips will help you save money on gas. If you have any tips to share, please leave them on our contact form.
