How to Select Beads for a Jewelry Making Project

Most people who make beaded jewelry enjoy the process of selecting beads so much, that they have a collection of beads stashed away for future projects. I confessed to being one of those types of beaders. Take heed! Finding and selecting beads could easily become an obsession.

When you have a project in mind, picking beads is easy if you follow these tips:

  1. Set a budget.
  2. Take your picture or sketch of the project with you to the store.
  3. Select a color range.
  4. While you want to look at the different choices, be decisive.
  5. Stay on task until all of the beads for that project are selected.

To select beads when you are looking for a project:

  1. Set a budget.
  2. Bring your notebook and a few project ideas.
  3. Look for a focal point of the project. This could be one bead or a strand of beads.
  4. Find beads to go with the focal beads that will enhance the project.
  5. Sketch out the idea.
  6. Find a clasp, wire or thread and the other materials that will finish off the project.

To select beads when you don't have a project in mind (Just because you're bead shopping):

  1. Set a budget.
  2. Look through the beads offered without making any choices.
  3. Take notes on the different types of beads you like. This way you can come back for beads at a later date that may not be in your budget right now.
  4. Prioritize the beads you want and select those at the top of the list for purchase.

A few more tips:

  • Take your time and enjoy.
  • You don't have to own ever bead - watch your budget!
